I have been relatively quiet for the past few months here, and I'd like to write about my recent experiences of navigating a pandemic with a newborn. To be frank, it's been a hectic ride. Third Trimester is Fun. Unless You're Panicking My wife entered the third trimester in February, by which time the news regarding how bad COVID-19 was going to be was a bit difficult.
Marketing is challenging in these days of COVID-19 because each person and business is experiencing the virus in different ways. All are impacted and all are (trying) to adapt. Some are suffering, some are growing. Regardless of if you’re suffering or growing right now, you’re likely anxious and fearful about what will come next, and likely feeling more isolated than ever before, even if you’re more engaged than others.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recently released its employment data for 2019. That means it’s time to update our annual Drug Channels analysis of pharmacist salaries and employment. Average base salaries were about $125,000, though there was substantial variation across practice settings. Total pharmacist employment grew in 2019. Consistent with our previous analyses, the share of pharmacists who work at hospitals reached a new high.
We previously reported on the Ontario government’s efforts to manage the risk of drug shortages in the early days of the pandemic. Those efforts included a recommendation that pharmacies dispense no more than a 30-days’ supply of medication to patients under the Ontario Drug Benefit ( ODB ) program. Because the policy resulted in additional dispensing fees being charged to patients, the government took further regulatory action to ensure that patients would not be required to pay additional fees

It’s time for our annual Drug Channels examination of PBM drug spending reports. For 2019, we again aim our magnifying glass at the annual trend reports from the largest pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs): CVS Health, Express Scripts, and Prime Therapeutics. (See their report links below.). Once again, we find that commercial drug spending did not race higher—contrary to what you keep hearing from journalists and politicians.
