The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit was passed into law nearly 20 years ago (2003) and implemented in 2006. We were a lonely voice, raising our hands during public hearings and in conversation with members, asking how they planned to accommodate the needs of nursing home residents.

The LTC pharmacy industry has not been aggressive at the state level since 2006, the year Part D took responsibility for dual eligibility in nursing homes. The states may be more hospitable to our overtures if we can offer solutions to healthcare cost, quality disparities, and access problems. We might want to rethink this.
